Through all of the available upgrades, the ballistic protection to weight ratio remains roughly 1:1. The upgrades are inexpensive and the perk requirements are minimal. Raider armor provides equal protection against ballistic and energy damage. This is the first actual set of armor the player will encounter on enemies, although some Leather armor pieces start appearing shortly after as well. However, all of the regular Raider armor mods are compatible with Sturdy Raider armor, so simply remove a Buttressed mod and add it to Sturdy Raider armor and right away you have Buttressed Sturdy Raider armor without having to make a new Buttressed mod or having to find one.
This allows going up through the various Material upgrades again for even greater protection. Standard Sturdy Raider is one step higher than regular Raider armor with the Buttressed mod.
A small pick is usually tucked in behind the leather belt. A pair of air tanks are worn together with it, one on the front and another on the back, with hoses connecting the main one on the front to the sack hoods commonly worn by raiders. The main assembly includes the aforementioned cage, used for protection and carrying equipment, with metal plates protecting the upper torso. The light grade of raider armor is modestly protective, with metal plates fixed to the shings, forearms, and shoulders using leather belts and augmented with salvaged wire.
The armor sets offer modest combat protection, but are excellent in surviving the hazards of scavenging and exploration. Crafted out of salvaged junk and industrial equipment, raider armor is thick, unwieldy, and provides excellent protection from environmental hazards, thanks to the jutting pipes arranged to form a protective cage, not unlike a car rollover protection structure. Raiders are masters of improvisation and their armor is testament to that fact.
